I lost that fight. I did do a proper swatch for Reuben, the boxy cardigan/vest. This cardigan uses two different colors. I chose purpuras and candombe. Purpuras is a tonal yarn of deep purples and while candombe has shades of purple, it also has lots of green, shading between a bright yellow green and a deeper shadowy green. Together the stitch pattern is distinct but subtle. I knit a good size swatch with a US8 and measured. My gauge was a quarter of a stitch more then it should be. I then soaked and blocked my swatch and measured again. This time my gauge was off in the other direction by almost one stitch less then it should be, but I liked the fabric. But I looked at the numbers of stitches cast on and looked at my swatch and decided maybe I should swatch with a US7, just to check.
I like the colors and the pattern…now to swatch the new needle.
