November is coming quickly but there are still four days left to swatch before casting on for NaKniSweMo (National Knit a Sweater Month). The goal of NaKniSweMo is that one casts on a sweater on November first and the sweater is finished by the end of the month. I like to look at it as time to focus on knitting an entire garment within a supportive environment. The supportive environment can be virtual or actual. The NaKniSweMo forum on Ravelry ( http://www.ravelry.com/groups/nakniswemo-kal ) is very active with commentary on swatching and stitch counts.
Last year I participated in NaKniSweMo and while I did not finish the sweater in November, I did accomplish more on that sweater then I ever have in one month and by the end of December the sweater was complete. I have been swatching and talking about NaKniSweMo and basically luring people into knitting a sweater or a top during November.
I have been swatching two yarns, a cotton linen blend and a 100% silk. To be honest it is the second time I have swatched the cotton linen yarn. I started a top in this yarn, got about half way done and decided I really, really do not like how the garment is progressing. So….after a lengthy time-out, it has been decided that the WIP will be frogged and re-knit into something much more fetching. This yarn would be great for NaKniSweMo because it is worsted and will mean fewer stitches. (Last year I knit a long sleeve sweater with sport weight yarn, bigger yarn would be better!)
The silk (on right in photo) knits up so lovely, it is a dream. The Malabrigo Mora has stitch definition, beautiful color and drapes well. However, it is a fingering weight yarn which means a lot of stitches. What will you swatch?
